You have lived here for years and you still move through it like a visitor.
You could not say when you noticed. It is not unhappiness exactly. It is that you have never quite stopped feeling like you are in someone else's arrangement, using their layout, living around decisions that were made before you got here.
The kitchen is where somebody else put the kitchen. The wall is the color somebody else chose. The shelf is where a previous person wanted a shelf, and you have worked around that shelf for six years without ever once thinking that you could move it.
And you have been waiting to feel differently. That is the part I want to get at. You have assumed that at some point, when enough is done, the feeling will change and it will feel like yours.
I do not think that is how it works, and I think the waiting is why it has not happened.
Because the feeling does not arrive when a house is finished. Houses are not finished, yours will not be finished, and if belonging waited for that it would never come to anybody.
It arrives from somewhere else entirely, and it is much smaller and much more available than you think.
Build ye houses, and dwell in them
There is a letter written to people who were living somewhere they had not chosen and did not want, and the instruction in it is startling.
Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. (Jeremiah 29:5, King James Version)
Build ye houses, and dwell in them.
That is written to exiles. To people in Babylon, who did not choose it, who were expecting to be there temporarily, and who were living the way anybody lives when they think they are about to leave: lightly, provisionally, hands off.
And they are not told to make peace with it emotionally. They are told to build. To plant something that takes years to fruit. To put their hands into the place.
And notice the two verbs together. Build and dwell. The building is not so the house becomes worthy of being lived in. The building is how the dwelling starts. Hands first, belonging after.
That is the reversal, and it is the whole thing. You have been waiting to feel at home so that you can put your hands on it. It goes the other way round.
You begin to dwell somewhere by putting your hands into it, and the feeling has never once had to come first. Jeremiah 29:5 tells exiles to build before they belong and treats the building as the way in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that possible in a house somebody has been living in provisionally for six years.
Your mistakes are the mark of ownership
Here is the part that will sound wrong at first and is the truest thing in this article.
The things you did badly in this house are what make it yours.
The shelf that is not level. The patch where the color does not quite match. The door you rehung that catches slightly in wet weather. Those are not blemishes on somebody else's house. They are the first marks that anybody who lives here has made on it, and they are yours in a way that nothing you paid for ever will be.
A house full of professional work belongs to whoever paid the invoice. A house with your crooked shelf in it belongs to you in a different sense entirely, and everybody who has ever stood in a room and pointed at a bad job they did with real affection knows exactly what I mean.
So the record of your learning is not damage. It is the evidence that somebody lives here now.
You have already left marks that nobody else could have left, and they have never once been damage to a place that was never yours. The written word tells exiles to build in a land they did not choose and calls that dwelling, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a record of learning into a record of belonging.
Finish one thing and stand in the doorway
So here is the last assignment on this site, and both halves matter.
Finish one thing today. Then stand in the doorway and look at it.
The finishing can be tiny. The catch you noticed in the first article. A screw. A hinge. It only has to be a thing that is done rather than a thing that is started.
And then the doorway, which is the part people skip and the part that does the work. Go and stand where you can see it and look at it for a minute without doing anything else. Not to check it. Not to find what is wrong with it. To look at a thing in your own house that is different because you were here.
That minute is the whole ceremony and it is the closest thing this site has to a celebration.
Jeremiah 29:5 puts building and dwelling in the same sentence and in that order, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is standing in the doorway with somebody looking at a small finished thing.
You are able to stand and look at what your own hands have done, and it has never once needed to be impressive to make this place yours. Jeremiah 29:5 says build ye houses, and dwell in them, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in a minute spent looking at a hinge.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has lived somewhere for years and still moves through it lightly.
You are not a visitor here, and the feeling you have been waiting for has never once been going to arrive on its own. I am not promising you the house gets finished, because it does not. Jeremiah 29:5 says build ye houses, and dwell in them, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns a place a person is staying into a place a person lives.
And this, which is the word I came with:
This is your house, not because it is finished, but because your hands are in it and your mistakes are in it, and there has never once been another way that anybody came to belong anywhere. The written word puts the building first and the dwelling after, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a doorway with somebody looking at a shelf.
Finish one thing. Then go and stand and look at it.
Declare this over yourself
- House I have moved through like a visitor for eleven years, you are mine. Jeremiah 29:5 says build ye houses, and dwell in them, so by the Holy Spirit I put my hands on you and I stay in the name of Jesus.
- Feeling I have been waiting for before I was allowed to belong, you were never coming first. The word gives exiles a hammer rather than a feeling and calls the building the way in, and by the Holy Spirit I am done living lightly in a place I have lived in for years.
- Father, You told people in a land they never chose to build and to dwell and to plant things that take years. Your word says build ye houses, and dwell in them, so by Your Spirit I finish one thing today, and I stand in the doorway, and I look at it.
